Maternal acrylamide and effects on offspring

Abstrakt

It is well known that prenatal development is an extremely sensitive period, in which the action of any toxicant may permanently impair its course. Prenatal exposure to acrylamide is of particular concern since reproductive and developmental toxicity of acrylamide has been reported in rodents and humans. Acrylamide and its metabolite glycidamide can readily pass through the placenta and mother's milk causing disorders in offspring organogenesis. This chapter summarizes the available data on the adverse effects of acrylamide on offspring development. The cited literature suggests that it causes toxicity in the offspring, which leads to disturbances in the functioning of the nervous system, reproductive system, and digestive tracts and causes depression in pup body weight at birth and weight gain during lactation. Thus, the diet of pregnant women and maternal and paternal health conditions is important factor that determine the prenatal and postnatal development of newborns
